TANK REPLACEMENT

The Beetroot Factory: Cold Water Storage Tank Replacement

GRP sectional cold water storage tank replacement at The Beetroot Factory food production site

CLIENT OVERVIEW

The Beetroot Factory in March is a high‑demand food production facility that relies on a consistent and safe supply of water for its operations. Our client, Neil Attwell from Advanced Water Treatment, was managing the site’s water hygiene requirements and required specialist support from Infinity Water Treatment due to the scale and complexity of the project.

A major issue had been raised in their Legionella Risk Assessment: the site’s ageing GRP sectional cold‑water storage tank had deteriorated severely and posed a clear contamination and compliance risk.

THE CHALLENGE

The factory’s existing tank—an estimated 48,000 litre GRP sectional tank (approx. 6m x 4m x 2m)—was in extremely poor condition. It showed significant deterioration, with biological growth on the external surfaces and even vegetation beginning to grow on the internal walls. The tank structure and hygiene levels had declined to a point where replacement was the only safe option.

Key challenges included:

  • Maintaining the factory’s water supply during works
  • Removing the old sectional tank safely and efficiently
  • Inspecting the concrete base and brick upstands for structural suitability
  • Installing and assembling a large new GRP sectional tank in a tight working space
  • Ensuring compliance with water hygiene standards
  • Coordinating with Neil and the factory to minimise disruption

OUR SOLUTION

Infinity Water provided a full end‑to‑end tank replacement service, including:

  • Installation of a temporary bypass system to maintain the factory’s water supply.

  • Complete removal and disposal of the deteriorated tank.

  • Inspection of the existing concrete base, confirming it was structurally suitable for the new build.

  • Delivery, assembly, and installation of a brand‑new GRP sectional cold‑water storage tank.

  • Installation of all new pipework connections, valves, and fittings.

  • Final chlorination and disinfection of the new tank prior to handover.

We worked closely with Neil Atwell (Advanced Water Treatment) throughout, providing the specialist expertise needed for a project of this scale.

THE PROCESS

1. Temporary Bypass & Preparatory Works

  • Installed a bypass supply to ensure uninterrupted water availability for the factory
  • Drained and isolated the old tank safely

2. Removal of the Old Tank

  • Cut the tank into manageable sections for safe removal
  • Extracted all panels and internal components despite restricted access
  • Cleared the plinth area for inspection

3. Base & Upstand Inspection

  • Assessed the concrete base and brick upstands for levelness, strength, and suitability
  • Confirmed no reinstatement or reinforcement works were required

4. Installation of the New GRP Sectional Tank

  • Delivered and positioned new tank components
  • Fully assembled and bolted the new structure on site
  • Installed all internal stays, sealing strips, and roof sections

5. Pipework & Commissioning

  • Connected all new pipework and fittings
  • Carried out full chlorination of the new tank and associated lines
  • Completed commissioning and handed the system back to the client

THE RESULTS

  • Full compliance restored following concerns raised in the Legionella Risk Assessment.

  • Safe, hygienic water storage with a modern GRP sectional tank.

  • Greatly reduced contamination risk, with the removal of vegetation and decayed materials.

  • Minimal disruption thanks to the temporary bypass ensuring continuous supply.

  • A cleaner, more reliable system that supports the factory’s heavy water demands.

Neil and the Beetroot Factory team were extremely happy with the quality of the installation and the efficiency of the turnaround. The success of this project has already led to discussions about replacing a second tank at their Torkstein site.

CLIENT FEEDBACK

“Infinity Water were brilliant. The project was a large undertaking, but they handled everything — bypass, removal, installation — with professionalism and expertise. The new tank has transformed the site’s water storage and resolved all compliance concerns.”
